The Book
Where It Began
This book isn't a manual or a lecture. It's a compass.
This book was never meant to be a book.
It began as simple weekly messages I wrote for my sons, CJ and Hunter, and a small group of their friends, as they stood on the edge of new chapters in their lives. CJ was graduating college and preparing to enter the professional world. Hunter was graduating high school and beginning his own journey into college. They were at different stages, but facing many of the same questions — about direction, confidence, relationships, and what it really means to live well.
Each week, I wanted to give them something small but meaningful to carry with them: a short story, a quote, a simple reflection. Not advice meant to overwhelm or instruct — just a pause. A moment to slow down, reflect, and see things a little more clearly.
Over time, those messages grew beyond my sons. Friends began sharing them with their own children. Teachers shared them with their students. Executives shared them with their teams — and before long, they were reaching people I'd never met. People going through their own transitions reached out to say how much they appreciated having something steady to return to each week. It became clear these lessons weren't tied to one specific age — they were universal reminders we all need, especially when life moves fast.
More than two years later, over 150 people receive one every Monday morning.
That desire to leave something lasting came from experience. I lost my mom to cancer when she was just fifty-nine. Her grace, strength, and kindness are still with me every day. I wanted CJ and Hunter — and anyone who reads this — to feel that same sense of presence and guidance as life continues to unfold, even when I'm not there in person to give it.
This book is a compass — a way to navigate the moments that shape us: the victories, the setbacks, the doubts, and the quiet triumphs that build character.
Why 52 Stories
This book was written for the world we live in now — a world full of noise, notifications, and constant distraction. Life moves quickly, and attention is stretched thin. That's why there are 52 stories — one for each week of the year. A little at a time. Just enough to pause, absorb, and apply. These lessons aren't meant to overwhelm. They're meant to remind.
If you're graduating, starting a new career, moving to a new place, or stepping into a different chapter of life, this book is for you. And if you're simply navigating change — at any age — it's for you too. Because no matter where we are in life, the search for balance, meaning, and connection never ends.
The perfect gift for
Inside the Book
What makes this book different isn't just the content — it's the sequence. Each pillar builds on the one before it, mirroring the way real growth actually unfolds in a life lived with intention. From finding your footing, to doing the work, to weathering what's hard, to showing up for others, to asking what you'll leave behind. Each pillar contains roughly ten short reflections — some stories, some parables, some drawn directly from life. Not a list of lessons. A journey.
Before you can shape the world, you have to believe you belong in it. Every journey begins not with the first step, but with the quiet conviction that you're capable of taking it. Belief isn't arrogance or blind optimism — it's a grounded kind of courage. The willingness to trust your instincts, embrace your individuality, and keep showing up, even when the outcome is uncertain.
The strength you're searching for is already within you — waiting to be remembered, claimed, and lived.
Once belief takes root, it naturally looks for motion. Dreams don't come to life because we think about them — they come to life because we act on them. We often wait for the perfect moment, the right clarity, the right plan. But there's no such thing. Action is what creates clarity. Even a single step, taken with intention, can shift your entire path.
Don't wait for confidence to appear before you begin — let beginning build your confidence.
Momentum doesn't mean smooth sailing. Life will test you — sometimes gently, sometimes all at once. But resilience isn't something you're born with; it's something you build, one choice, one challenge, one recovery at a time. True resilience isn't about being unshakable. It's about bending without breaking — patience, grace, and perspective forged in the unseen work of endurance.
Storms don't last forever. And growth doesn't happen without rain.
Endurance teaches us something important: we're not meant to carry everything alone. Every step we take is shaped by the people who walk beside us — those who lift us, challenge us, and remind us what truly matters. Connection is what gives our lives meaning. What people remember most isn't what you did — it's how you made them feel.
When you light someone else's path, your own path always grows brighter.
At some point, every one of us pauses to ask: what will I leave behind? Not in things, but in moments — the love we've shown, the lessons we've shared, the way we've lived. Legacy isn't about fame or accumulation. It's about impact — the quiet influence we have on the lives around us. Every act of kindness given freely becomes part of what endures.
The answer isn't found in someday. It's found in how you show up today.
Carry This With You is a book with architecture — and a book with heart.
How to Read It
There's no required order. You can start at the beginning, open to any page, or return to a story when life calls you back to it. What resonates during one chapter of your life may mean something entirely different when you read it again years later. The words don't change — you do.
At the back of the book, a thematic appendix groups all 52 stories across 36 themes — so when life calls for a specific kind of steadiness, you can find exactly what you need.
One story per week — the pace it was written for. A few minutes of reflection built into the rhythm of the year.
No rules, no order required. Let a story find you wherever you are. Some books work this way better than any other.
A story that lands one way at 22 will mean something different at 35, or 50. This is a book that grows with the person who holds it.
Use the appendix when life calls for something specific — courage, gratitude, resilience, perspective. The right story is always there.
From the Book
Two years into my first job, I lost a promotion I thought I'd earned. What I did with that disappointment mattered more than the promotion ever would have.
Seven years in, good salary, real responsibility — and something inside quietly said otherwise. A moment of clarity changed everything. Thirty years later, I still own that creative agency.
A twelve-year-old baseball player. A science teacher's three pots of boiling water. And a championship won not by talent alone — but by a mindset that transformed pressure into possibility.
For most of my life, I was quietly afraid of being the center of attention. Then I stood at a podium and turned to face the room. What I saw changed me permanently.
Three bricklayers. Three answers to the same question. What set the third one apart wasn't skill — it was vision. Purpose turns routine into intention and effort into legacy.
Discover Your Story
A sample of the thematic appendix is shown below. The full version at the back of the book groups all 52 stories across 36 emotional and situational themes — because life doesn't always hand you a chapter heading. Sometimes you just know what you're feeling, and you need something that meets you there.
You can arrive with a specific theme in mind, or simply browse until something stops you. There's no wrong entry point. Sometimes the message you didn't know you needed is the one that finds you first.
See the full list of 36 themes below.
Think of the appendix as a quiet companion — a way to reconnect with exactly the right words at exactly the right moment. Because sometimes a reminder doesn't change your direction. It simply helps you walk it with more purpose, perspective, and heart.

More than just a gift
Most gifts mark a moment. This one grows with the person who receives it. Every passage is short enough to read in a few minutes and meaningful enough to carry for a lifetime. It's the gift that says: I'm thinking of you. I want you to carry this.
Every parent, teacher, leader, and coach carries wisdom they hope will reach the people in their life at the right moment — guidance they want to pass on, things they want those they care about to know and carry forward. This book puts those words in one place, in a form that can be given, kept, and returned to. It is, in that sense, something like the letter of wisdom you always meant to write — except it's already written, and ready to give.
